UFO saucer filming miniature
An original miniature used in the production of UFO, the 1970 science fiction series created by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson.
This is one of the original UFO saucer miniatures used in the production which was designed by noted miniature effects artist Derek Meddings. The top dome of the miniature is constructed in heat formed perspex and is attached to a central column which houses a small motor; this would spin the lower part of the model around while the top remained static, the motor was powered through two of the wires which were used to suspend the miniature during filming resulting in a hovering spinning saucer. The top dome features small holes where small pyrotechnic charges would have been placed while the lower body of the miniature was dressed with a number of paddles which were covered in a highly reflective material in order to catch the light as it spun around giving the desired ethereal and otherworldly appearance.
The miniature measures approximately 5" in diameter and remains in good production used condition with a number of the paddles having been replaced and the functionality of the motor untested due to the possibility of damage occurring.
This represents one of only two original UFO saucer filming miniatures known to exist today and an iconic example of an original Anderson filming miniature of which very few remain in existence today, a highly displayable and incredibly rare artefact from this classic series which remains noted for its groundbreaking miniature effects.
