From humble beginnings Tim Burton has become one of the most iconic filmmakers of his generation, his distinctive style bringing a visually striking and unique vison to every production with which he is associated. Following an apprenticeship with Walt Disney Animation Burton produced the animated shorts Vincent (1982) and Frankenweenie (1984) which he would later remake as a full length feature, his directorial debut came with Pee-Wee's Big Adventure (1985) which was followed by the critically acclaimed Beetlejuice (1988) and the superhero blockbuster Batman (1989) which established Burton as a major force in Hollywood. Edward Scissorhands (1990) marked his first collaboration with Johnny Depp who has since appeared in a further seven Burton pictures and the superhero sequel Batman Returns (1992) demonstrated his trademark dark imagination to the maximum after being given full control by Warner Brothers.
In 1993 Burton visioned and produced one of his most famous works in the Henry Selick directed stop motion animation tour de force The Nightmare Before Christmas, the pair would later collaborate again on another musical fantasy James and the Giant Peach (1996). The live action hits Ed Wood (1994), Mars Attacks (1996) and Sleepy Hollow (1999) were followed by the big budget remakes Planet of the Apes (2001) and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005) before Burton returned to stop motion animation with the visual triumph Corpse Bride (2005), his first full length animation feature as a director following on from the success of his earlier collaborations with Selick. Other well received box office hits such as the Johnny Depp led Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007) and Alice in Wonderland (2010) have further cemented Burton's status as one of the biggest names in Hollywood today.
