Description

An original script used in the production of Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, the 1971 picture starring Gene Wilder under the direction of Mel Stuart.

This screenplay represents the first draft adapted from the novel by Roald Dahl himself, this version of the script would be the subject of numerous changes and as such there are many differences in the development and dialogue which are not present in the finished movie. Director Mel Stuart discussed this draft at length in his book 'Pure Imagination' noting the original running time of this version being too long and and the description of Wonka having a pointed black beard not being the image wanted for a cinematic leading man, he also cited the "lack of drama" in Charlie's victory and disappointment with various other elements of the screenplay which was extensively rewritten first by Dahl and later by David Seltzer of Wolper pictures.

This original first draft screenplay comprises of 152 pages bound between front and rear covers of light green card with the front featuring the tentative title of the movie "CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY" and the Wolper pictures logo. As noted above many differences to the finished movie are present and as such this represents an interesting artefact showing the development of this classic picture.

The script remains in generally excellent production used condition with some minor cover wear, minor age related toning also present, overall fine.

A fine example of original production material from this highly regarded classic.
