Philip Ashley (Richard Burton) waistcoat
An original costume used in the production of My Cousin Rachel, the 1952 mystery romance picture starring Olivia de Havilland and Richard Burton.
This waistcoat was worn on screen by Hollywood legend Richard Burton as Philip Ashley in various scenes of the picture. Bespoke made for Burton by noted industry tailors Western Costume the waistcoat is constructed from silk and satin and features a pink floral pattern. To the interior is a Western Costume stamp and label which is type written with the code '74-2520-2' and 'RICHARD BURTON' with further size information below. The varying styles of buttons present today would appear to be later additions and the waistcoat is believed to have been taken in for use in a subsequent unknown production and hand inscribed with the size '38' in pencil along with other illegible writing. My Cousin Rachel was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Costume Design and also saw Burton nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, the first of several nominations he would receive throughout his career.
The waistcoat remains in generally excellent production used condition with some light staining and wear as you would expect with a costume of this vintage.
An incredibly rare example of original wardrobe from this multi Academy Award nominated picture.
