Man-at-Arms (Jon Cypher) scanning device
An original prop used in the production of Masters of the Universe, the 1987 science fiction fantasy picture starring Dolph Lundgren under the direction of Gary Goddard.
This is the original scanning device used on screen as He-Man (Dolph Lungren) and company land on Earth after escaping Skeletor's (Frank Langella) throne room at the beginning of the movie and can be seen used by Jon Cypher as Man-at-Arms to scan for alien lifeforms as the cow approaches in the bushes. This impressive fully functional prop was custom made by effects house Boss Films, constructed largely from plastic and brass with internal circuitry the prop features a light up screen with a rotating scanner to the end and a sliding handle. To the underside of the prop are three switches used to control the power, light and rotation of the scanner with a input marked with plus and minus symbols where power would have been introduced to the unit likely via a rig concealed up Cypher's sleeve. The scanner is the only one ever made by Boss Films and can be conclusively screen matched to the one seen in the extreme close up.
The scanner measures approximately 8" in length with the handle extended and 4" wide, it remains in excellent screen used condition with some minor surface wear. The functionality of the lights and motor have not been tested due to the lack of an unsuitable connector and power unit although this would not be recommended practice with a prop which is now thirty years of age.
An incredibly fine example of prop making at the very highest level this represents a highly displayable artefact from this now cult 1980s movie.
