Lord Raglan (John Gielgud) jacket
An original costume created for the production of The Charge of the Light Brigade, the 1968 war picture The Charge of the Light Brigade directed by Tony Richardson.
This jacket was bespoke made by leading industry costumiers L & H Nathan, later of Bermans and Nathans, for use by actor John Gielgud as Lord Raglan. Constructed from beige cotton the jacket features a slit to the inside of the elbow on the right sleeve and a slit to the same area of the body which would allow Gielgud to place his arm inside the costume for his portrayal of the one armed Raglan. The costume features a period L & H Nathan label to the interior which is hand inscribed 'SIR JOHN GEILGUD' (sic) in pen. Although custom made for the production this jacket does not appear on screen in the final cut of the movie.
The jacket remains in generally excellent vintage condition.
An interesting and rare example of original principal character wardrobe from this well regarded picture.
