Joppa guard serpent shield
An original shield used in the production of the 1981 fantasy classic Clash of the Titans starring Harry Hamlin and co-produced by stop motion animation legend Ray Harryhausen.
This shield was used on screen by one of the guards which accompanies Perseus (Harry Hamlin) on his quest to find the Medusa, the guard who carries this shield being killed by the two headed Dioskilos beast.. Each of the guards had a uniquely designed shield design bearing a different mythical creature with this one being the serpent version. Constructed from two pieces of gold painted aluminium the shield features a three dimensional serpent design of resin with a decorative pattern to the outer edge and a handle to the rear which appears to have been subsequently replaced. The shield can screen matched to various scenes in the movie due to the serpent tongue missing from the pattern, damage that clearly occurred during the production.
The prop shield measures approximately 26.5" in diameter and remains in good screen used condition with some bending to the outer edges and some minor denting and scratching.
A rare and displayable screen used artefact from this classic picture which will surely forever remain a genre favourite.
