Description

An original prop created for the production of the long running BBC science fiction television series Doctor Who.

This Egyptian style scroll was created by the production for the classic 1975 serial Pyramids of Mars starring Tom Baker as The Doctor for use in the scenes where Marcus Scarman (Bernard Archard) discovers the chamber at the beginning of the first episode. The scroll is believed to be one of three unique examples created for the serial by outside contractor Stan Griffiths for visual effects designer Ian Scoones. Accomplished in ink and watercolour paint on card stock which has been aged to resemble parchment the scroll features a large overhead elevation of a pyramid with various Egyptian style imagery and symbols.

Despite ultimately not appearing on screen in Pyramids of Mars one of the other scrolls created alongside this would go on to appear in the series in the 1979 serial City of Death. This can be seen in the scene where The Countess (Catherine Schell) discovers the origin of her husband (Julian Glover) when she removes two maps from a book, the larger of which was originally made for use in Pyramids of Mars with its design and style matching the other two known to exist perfectly.

The scroll measures an impressive 27" x 19" and remains in excellent vintage and folded condition with intentional edge wear and ageing.

A highly displayable artefact with genuine ties to two of the all time classic serials of this cult science fiction series.
