Derek Meddings personal storyboard binder
An original storyboard binder used in the production of the 1995 James Bond picture Goldeneye starring Pierce Brosnan as the suave spy.
This is the original storyboard binder assembled and used by noted Academy Award winning special effects pioneer Derek Meddings throughout the production. Meddings had a long association with Bond which began in 1973 with Live and Let Die and continued throughout the 1970s in which time he produced some of the most incredible miniature effects work the franchise has seen, notably the tanker sequences in The Spy Who Loved Me and the groundbreaking special effects of Moonraker for which he received an Academy Award nomination. After a fourteen year break from the franchise Derek Meddings returned as miniature effects supervisor for Goldeneye, this would prove to be his last picture as he passed away during post production resulting in the movie being dedicated to his memory.
This binder was assembled by Meddings and used as he directed the various miniature effects sequences during the production and interestingly is contained within a green ring binder which he had previously used on the 1981 James Bond picture For Your Eyes Only with the spine being hand inscribed 'FOR YOUR EYES ONLY, COST STATEMENTS'. Contained within is a wealth of storyboards for all the major action sequences of the movie which are split by file dividers, in front of this are several smaller sequences which have been assembled by Meddings as they were particularly relevant to the model unit, any boards in this section not relevant to the model unit have had paper glued on top to blank them off and these are divided by pages which are hand inscribed in Derek's hand with the name of the sequence on the rear of production time sheets. The various sequences of the movie represented within the binder include the following:
Further to the various storyboard sequences the binder also contains the following:
There are numerous instances throughout the binder of hand inscribed annotations, including a requirements list and some model shots outlined in highlighter, in total the binder contains over 400 pages and represents and fine production artefact used by one of the most talented and influential miniature effects artists of his generation.
The ring binder itself remains in well used vintage condition with some water staining while the contents remain in generally excellent condition with some light edge wear.
A fine and concise production artefact from one of the most celebrated franchises in cinematic history.
