Rovers Return pub sign
An original sign used in the production of Coronation Street, the worlds longest running television soap opera and British institution which was first broadcast in 1960.
This is an original sign used on the set of the Rovers Return Inn, the iconic fictional pub and popular meeting place located on the corner of Coronation Street. This sign is constructed from thick plywood with hand cut letters of MDF and a border of decorative architrave, the sign is entirely hand painted in the signature green of the Rovers Return Inn with gold lettering, red symbols and white highlights to the border, it features four holes where it was originally fixed to the set. It is believed this particular sign was located in the porch on the interior Rovers Return set in the 1980s and early 1990s before being removed when the set was revamped. There are two labels pasted to the verso, one featuring the Granada Television logo and the other (partially missing) that of a television scenery contractor, from this label we can deduce that this sign was removed from set circa 1994/1995 as the company was formed in May 1994 and it features a telephone number without the 1 in the area dialling code which changed on PhONEday in April 1995.
The sign measures a very impressive 35.5" high, 19.5" wide and approximately 1" thick at its widest point, it remains in excellent production used condition with some edge wear and minor paint loss, overall very fine.
An instantly recognisable and culturally significant artefact from this long running icon of British television.
