Joppa guard griffin shield
An original shield used in the production of Clash of the Titans, the 1981 fantasy classic starring Harry Hamlin and co-produced by stop motion animation legend Ray Harryhausen.
This shield was used on screen by one of the guards which accompanies Perseus (Harry Hamlin) on his quest to find the Medusa, the guard who carries this shield being killed with an arrow in the memorable scenes inside her lair. Each of the guards had a uniquely designed shield design bearing a different mythical creature with this one being the version featuring the griffin. Constructed from two pieces of gold painted aluminium with a decorative pattern to the outer edge and a handle to the rear which appears to have been subsequently replaced. The shield once featured the three dimensional griffin design in resin which has either become detached or was removed for use in a subsequent production, outline visible, the rear of the shield which featured a rig as visible briefly on screen has also been removed and tape placed over the markings where it once was.
The prop shield measures approximately 26.5" in diameter and remains in good screen used condition exhibiting some denting, scratching and paint loss.
A rare and displayable screen used artefact from this classic picture which will surely forever remain a genre favourite.
