1977 saw the release of Star Wars sparking the birth of a science fiction and popular culture phenomenon and one of the most extensive media franchises of all time, written and directed by George Lucas the film starred Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Alec Guinness as characters which would go on to become household names amongst movie buffs.
Star Wars was an immediate hit surpassing Steven Spielberg's Jaws as the highest grossing picture of all time and winning several Academy Awards, it was to become particularly noted for its groundbreaking visual effects sequences by the Lucas formed effects house Industrial Light & Magic whose pioneering techniques would become not only incredibly influential but an industry standard. To this day it remains a landmark in science fiction cinema and is widely regarded to be one of the greatest and most influential pictures of all time. The success of Star Wars was followed by that of The Empire Strikes Back in 1980 and Return of the Jedi in 1983 which expanded the universe and completed what remains one of the most significant motion picture trilogies of all time.
In 1999 Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace was released, once again written and directed by Lucas it was the first film of a prequel trilogy which would conclude in 2005 with Revenge of the Sith. This year will see the release of The Force Awakens, the first film in a planned sequel trilogy keeping the Star Wars film franchise alive after almost forty years.
