Sherlock Holmes (Jeremy Brett) coat
An original costume used in the production of the long running television adaptation of Sherlock Holmes starring Jeremy Brett in the title role.
This coat was worn on screen by Jeremy Brett as Sherlock Holmes in multiple episodes of the series, first appearing in the 1984 Adventures of Sherlock Holmes episode The Speckled Band and being subsequently reused in the 1988 Return of Sherlock Holmes episode Silver Blaze and the 1991 Case-Book episode The Boscombe Valley Mystery. This floor length coat was bespoke made for Jeremy Brett by leading industry costumiers Bermans & Nathans and is constructed from high quality grey cotton the garment features two pockets, cuff straps and an integral belt to the rear.
After being used by Brett in Sherlock Holmes the coat was retained by Angels and used in a subsequent unknown production, for this some minor modifications were made with the rear belt being shortened and buttons added at which point the buttons to the front were changed to match. There is evidence to the underside of the collar where the hood seen in Sherlock Holmes was attached, the costume now lacks this feature although this does not hugely detract from the piece given that it is used with no hood in its first on screen appearance.
The costume remains in generally excellent production used condition with some minor staining most notably to the bottom which likely occurred during location filming. There is also evidence of some small repair work carried out to the bottom of the costume however these have been professionally executed by the costume house, otherwise very fine.
Many consider Brett's to be the definitive on screen portrayal of the iconic character and this represents an incredibly rare example of principal character wardrobe from this well received adaptation.
