Moon week - from the collection of Bill Pearson

Moon is a 2009 science fiction drama film , co-written and directed by Duncan Jones the film stars Sam Rockwell as Sam Bell a Lunar Industries astronaut with support from Kevin Spacey as his robot companion Gerty.

Sam Bell is nearing the end of a three year contract with Lunar Industries. His home has been Sarang, a moon base where he has spent his days alone, mining Helium 3,Sam Rockwell as Sam Bell the precious gas which holds the key to reversing the Earth's energy crisis. Isolated and determined Sam has followed the rulebook obediently and his time on the moon has been enlightening, but uneventful. The solitude has given him time to reflect on the mistakes of his past and work on his raging temper. He does his job mechanically, spending most of his time dreaming of his imminent return to Earth, to his wife, young daughter and early retirement.

Two weeks shy of his departure from Sarang Sam starts seeing things, hearing things and feeling strange. When a routine extraction goes horribly wrong he discovers that Lunar have their own plans for replacing him and that the new recruit is eerily familiar. Before he can return to Earth Sam has to confront himself and the discovery that the life he has created may not be his own and that it is more than his contract which is about to expire.

Bill Pearson on the model stage at Shepperton Studios with the Harvester filming miniatureMoon premiered in early 2009 at the Sundance film Festival and later that year saw general release in the United States and the United Kingdom. Since its release Moon has attracted a small cult following, this is in part attributable to the use of model miniature effects rather than the more modern approach of creating the effects digitally. Director Duncan Jones worked closely with designer Gavin Rothery and veteran model maker Bill Pearson (Alien, Outland) to create the model miniatures required. Bill assembled a talented model team, based at his workshop at Shepperton Studios they were responsible for building the model miniatures including the entire Sarang base and also dressing some of the full size sets.
